Introduction
Every time I travel, I meet new friends. And every time, those friends become like an extended family to me. But these meaningful friendships don't always come naturally - So how do you make friends while traveling? And once you've made them, how do you keep them? Here are some tips for making new friends on the road:
Join a group
The best way to make friends while traveling is to say yes to experiences and groups you might not normally try. Go to a new workout class, sign up for a class, and put yourself in situations for shared experiences with new people. Some of my favorite places to look:
- Meetup
- Facebook Groups
- November Project or other workout groups
- Reddit or Discord groups
- BumbleBFF
- If you're spiritual, a church or group that aligns with your views and values
- Join a recreational sports league in that city
Volunteer together.
How to find volunteer opportunities: There are a number of websites that can help you find volunteer opportunities abroad. If you're looking for something specific, like teaching English or working at an orphanage, try Volunteer Match and WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms).
Frequent the same places
When you show up to the same spots for coffee or to workout then people begin to recognize you and it's easier to start conversations. It can feel intimidating but if you recognize someone, say hi!
Stay in touch.
Staying in touch with your new friends can be one of the hardest parts. That's why we created Reyla. Join the waitlist and we'll help you remember when to reach out to your new friends and what to say.
Conclusion
Making friends while traveling can be a daunting task, but don’t worry! The more you practice these tips and tricks, the better your chances will be of meeting some great people—and maybe even finding yourself a bestie along the way.
